Privacy Policy

Ekko is a shared Bible-study app that lets small groups read Scripture together, track their progress, and share notes and prayer requests. This policy explains what personal data we collect, why, and your rights over it. We've tried to keep it in plain English.
Who we are
Ekko is operated by Peter Crymble ("we", "us"). For any privacy question — including to access or delete your data — contact us at support@ekkobible.com.
For UK data-protection purposes, we are the "data controller" for the information you put into Ekko.
What we collect
- Your profile: the display name you choose, an optional emoji/colour or photo, and an optional email address.
- An optional PIN you can set to protect your profile. This is stored only as a one-way encrypted "hash" — we never store or see the PIN itself.
- Your activity: which chapters you've marked as read, reading streaks and points.
- Your content: notes, highlights, and prayer requests you create — and any replies or reactions. Some of this is shared with your group by design (see below).
- Notifications: if you turn on reminders or push notifications, the technical subscription needed to deliver them.
- Basic technical data needed to run the app (e.g. your sign-in token), stored on your own device.
- Diagnostics: if the app hits an error, we log the error message and which screen you were on (never your notes or prayers) to our own servers so we can fix problems. We don't use any third-party analytics or advertising trackers.
We do not use advertising trackers, and we do not sell your data to anyone.
Sharing within your group
Ekko is built for groups, so some information is visible to the other members of any study you join — your display name, your reading progress, and any notes, highlights or prayer requests you choose to share. Notes you mark as private are visible only to you. You can also hide your progress from the group in Settings.
Why we use your data (legal basis)
- To provide the app you've asked to use — creating your profile, syncing your group, saving your progress and content (performance of a contract / your request).
- To send emails such as your group invite code and, if you opt in, reading reminders (your consent, which you can withdraw at any time).
- To keep the app secure and working properly (our legitimate interest).
Who processes your data for us
We use a small number of trusted service providers to run Ekko:
- Supabase — our database and backend, where your account and content are stored.
- Netlify — hosts the app.
- Resend — sends our emails (invite codes and reminders) to the address you provide.
- Bible-text providers — Crossway (ESV), bible-api.com and API.Bible supply the Scripture text. We only send them the passage you're reading, never your personal data.
- Web push services (provided by your browser/device maker) — deliver notifications if you enable them.
Some of these providers may process data outside the UK/EEA. Where that happens, appropriate safeguards (such as standard contractual clauses) are relied upon to protect your information.
How long we keep it
We keep your data for as long as you use Ekko. If you ask us to delete your profile, or a group leader removes you, your profile and the content tied to it are deleted. Deleting a whole study removes its members and their content too.
Cookies & local storage
Ekko doesn't use advertising or tracking cookies. It stores a few essential items on your own device (such as which study you're in and your sign-in token) purely so the app works and remembers you. Clearing your browser storage will sign you out.
Children
Ekko isn't aimed at young children. If a study includes anyone under 16, it should be set up and overseen by a parent, guardian or group leader.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to:
- access the personal data we hold about you;
- correct anything that's wrong (you can edit your profile in the app);
- have your data deleted ("right to be forgotten");
- get a copy of your data, or object to certain uses;
- withdraw any consent you've given (e.g. turn off email reminders).
To exercise any of these, email support@ekkobible.com. You also have the right to complain to the UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
